Calling Officers on Holidays - Bankers' Union Letter To Banks' Management

Request Forwarded by Bankers' Union Against Calling Officers on Holidays

It is brought to our notice that some of the Zonal Managers and Regional Managers have instructed the Branch Heads to call all officers for recovery work on 27th & 28th October.

This is agreed that the recovery is always the result of continuous and concerted efforts and it can not be achieved overnight by one visit on a holiday. Our officers who are entrusted with the job of recovery have been putting sincere efforts to recover NPAs to the best of their capacity and the infrastructure provided by the bank. But while we do have concern for the bank, we do not believe in symbolic actions of making a show on holidays just to please the bosses.

In recent times, there have been many instances of the defaulters physically attacking recovery  officers of the Bank. In one instance, a defaulter has gone to the extent of entering the house of a recovery officer and physically assaulting him and his wife.
Now, at a time when a part of the country is celebrating Karwa Chauth tomorrow and the entire country is eagerly preparing for the celebration of Diwali which starts from 5th November, the borrowers  may get agitated if our officers go to their home for recovery of their NPAs on a holiday and the safety and security of our officers may be put at risk.

You will appreciate that our officers are required to sit late every day to complete the day's work and are not in a position to spend quality time with their family on week days and hence they need to spend their holidays (especially weekly off and festivals) with family and friends. Moreover, most of our officers too have planned to spend the next two holidays (i.e. tomorrow and day after tomorrow) to celebrate Karwa Chauth / preparing for Diwali celebrations.

In view of the above, we express the inability of our members to respond to the call of the ZMs / RMs and the attend the office on holidays and hence request you to advise the Zonal Managers / Regional Managers not to compel the officers for office work on holidays. Further, also advise  them to arrange for the safety and security of our members who may respond to their call and visit the borrowers for recovery on holidays. Needless to say that the officers who work on holidays as per the call given by management be paid the compensation or given compensatory off as per their choice.

With greetings,

UNQUOTE

We reiterate our stand that the officers can not be compelled to attend office work on holidays as our holidays are for our family and friends. And also that if an officer attends to office work on a holiday, he should be paid suitable compensation or given compensatory off as per his choice. Hence, our members need not attend the office under compulsion on holidays.
